GREEN CAT WITH LIGHTS a.k.a. Stroogo Von M
If you take a close look, you will notice something missing from this painting. The usual "Dr. Seuss" signature has been replaced with the moniker, "Stroogo Von M."
Just a few months ago, while talking with Audrey Geisel about artworks in the new Secrets of the Deep book, the question of Stroogo Von M. came up. Audrey replied, “Oh, Ted liked to hang that artwork in the entryway of ‘Seuss House’ [the Geisel home]. When people would come in, they would invariably ask about the painting. Ted would answer, ‘That’s my Stroogo Von M. How do you like it?’ In return, what he would get from friends was an honest opinion without them knowing it was his painting. It was one of Ted’s great practical jokes. On occasion, someone would say, ‘Ah yes, I know Stroogo’s work,’ which would say something quite different about the house guest.”
Green Cat with Lights falls into the category of Ted’s “Big Cats” along with Joseph Katz and His Coat of Many Colors, Indistinct Cat with Cigar, Cat from the Wrong Side of the Tracks, Alley Cat for a Very Long Alley, and Wisdom of the Orient Cat. These are some of the most sought-after and cherished artworks of the entire collection.

THE CAT BEHIND THE HAT
Ted Geisel’s most iconic self-portrait ran in the July 6, 1957 issue of The Saturday Evening Post. Appearing just four months after the launch of The Cat in the Hat, this classic portrait depicts Dr. Seuss as his mischievous alter ego, complete with red and white stovepipe hat, cat ears, and the Cat’s now famous red bow tie. Ted and his hatted Cat shared an affinity for bow ties, each wearing them throughout their long lives.

CUDDLE FISH
Collection curator Bill Dreyer writes in the preface to the Secrets of the Deep book: “While researching Ted’s paintings and sculpture at his La Jolla home, I became aware that Ted and Audrey kept more than forty artworks behind a concealed false door that were publicly unknown and unpublished, all waiting for Audrey to reveal them to Ted’s fans.”
Cuddle Fish is one of these artworks, kept close at hand by Ted throughout his lifetime, which resides still with Audrey in the Geisel home. In the vein of the Horton Line Drawing, this work exudes classic Seussian charm and confirms the Good Doctor’s breezy artistic talent.
